Going Out of Town and Adjusting Accordingly

I once read an article that suggested either adjusting your grocery budget to reflect the fact that you won't be eating at home and either spending less on groceries that month or using that extra to stock up on staples. I'd recommend deciding what you want to do beforehand, as opposed to getting to the end of the month and realizing that you spent the same amount you normally do despite being away from home for a week. Obviously you will spend at least some money on your trip for food. For me, that money normally goes into the vacation category, and is planned for when we estimate the cost of a trip, so it has no effect on either the dining or grocery budgets. I normally purchase snacks for the drive and this does tend to go in with the monthly groceries. If you have a tight grocery budget, it can be hard to stock up on things, so this is a great opportunity to stay within budget and fill up your pantry.
